4. Speaking / Reading / Writing-Based Lesson Plan

Context: This lesson was prepared for students enrolled in a Spanish II course, the second class in the Spanish for Heritage Learners series at the University of New Mexico. The class meets for 50 minutes, three days per week. Enrollment in this course series presupposes some linguistic or cultural connection to Spanish, and is intended for students who might already have some sort of baseline abilities in the language. The purpose of this lesson is to give the students the opportunity to test their comprehension skills through a short reading, as well as express themselves creatively through a speaking activity in-class and a written homework assignment. All three of these activities will encompass all three modes of communication and four language skills: the warm-up speaking activity will consist of students expanding upon a previously designed interaction between a receptionist and a client (Presentational – Writing; Interpersonal – Speaking & Listening); the main activity will consist of a short reading related to travel (Remigio 2019), which the students will read on their own, answer some short comprehension questions, and discuss their answers and the story in small groups, making a pictoline-style poster as a class (Main activity; Interpretive – Reading; Interpersonal – Speaking & Listening); the students will then be assigned a written assignment for homework, where they must create a short creative writing piece, to be turned in at the beginning of the next class period (Presentational – Writing).

Chapter/Sequence: Due to the nature of this sort of Heritage Language program, there is not one consistent resource or textbook used in class, and activities/materials are taken from a number of different resources, or created by the instructor. Any use of outside materials will be cited in the course of this Plan. All transcripts (located in the Appendix) will be available for use if a student demonstrates the need.

Description of lesson:

Warm-up Speaking Activity (15-20 minutes):

In a previous lesson (“General Lesson Plan”), students scripted and acted out a 1-1:30 minute role playing, where they posed as a client and a receptionist at a hotel or hostel. Now, they will reuse these scripts and expand upon them to be approximately double the length (2-3 minutes total). In pairs, they will take any previous scripted material that they had, and add detail to it according to one of two scenarios: (1) there was some sort of issue in booking the room, that the receptionist and client must reconcile together; or (2) the client has some sort of special need that must be met, or is particularly picky in their choice of a room. Each of the pairs will be given ~5 minutes to add information to their original script to meet one of these scenarios. When everyone is finished, the opportunity will be given for students to present their script and receive collective feedback from the class, for ~10-15 minutes.

Main Reading Activity (25-30 minutes):

For the main activity, the class will be given ~10 minutes to read through the story “Tino de la selva, el viajero” on their own (Remigio 2019; transcript located in the Appendix). The story has a twofold benefit to the students, through (1) reinforcing the theme of travel and the use of the past tenses, which have been touched upon in previous lessons, and (2) introducing the topic of Catholicism/Christianity, which is extremely important and central to the culture of many people in Latin America. Upon finishing the reading, students will answer the following comprehension questions in English:

1.     True or False: After the passing of his grandmother, Tino will never travel again.

2.     True or False: Tino’s father never comes home because he doesn’t care about his family.

3.     Multiple Choice: Tino’s family comes from:

a.     Lima

b.     Cusco

c.     The Peruvian Jungle

d.     La Paz

4.     Short Answer: What does Tino’s other grandmother tell him when they are preparing for another vacation?

5.     Short Answer (Opinion): Applicable to Latin America in general, in your opinion why does the topic of religion/religious places play such a central role in the story?

When all students are finished with the story and comprehension questions, the class will be split into five different groups, and assigned a different section of the story. Each group will be given a poster and ~10 minutes to discuss their assigned section, identifying the three main points contributing to the storyline, and drawing a picture representing the main theme or scene in each section. For the final ~10 minutes of classtime, the class will come back together and discuss each of the posters in chronological order, sharing why each group chose their three points and how they decided what to draw. Class will conclude with an explanation of the homework, and answering any questions the students might have related to the day’s activities.

Written Homework:

For homework, students will write a short creative writing piece. It will be two to three paragraphs in length, and will relate to a similar topic as the reading: The students will tell someone’s travel story, either real or fictitious, and must include information about where the story takes place and what activities the characters partook in, who the main character traveled with and why they are important, sufficient use of description, as well as dialogue between the main character, their supporting character, and at least one other person in a service position. This written activity will tie in ideas from the current lesson with three previous lessons, through (1) the use of basic travel-related vocabulary ("Vocabulary-Based Lesson Plan"), (2) a description of another person who is important in the life of the main character (this lesson and "Grammar-Based Lesson Plan"), (3) the use of the preterit and imperfect tenses in the telling of a story ("Grammar-Based Lesson Plan"), (4) ab interaction between the character and someone in the service industry ("General-Based Lesson Plan"), (5) and ultimately the use of narration to tell a story (this lesson).  

The rubric, which will be provided to students before they leave class, reflects the five points listed above, and can be seen in Appendix 2 below:

Constantino era su nombre, pero de cariño le decían Tino el pequeñín.

Tino le pusieron así por su abuelo paterno, un buen hombre trabajador, oriundo de un pueblo lejano, serio, callado, pero con grandes virtudes. Que junto a su abuelita lucharon contra grandes adversidades, para darles un futuro mejor a sus hijos, entre ellos el padre de Tino. Pero sobre todo los mejores consejos para que sean mejores personas en este mundo a veces un poco ingrato para las personas de buen corazón.

Tino vio la luz por primera vez una mañana de febrero en la calurosa y hermosa Ciudad de Iquitos; sus ojitos chinitos y su carita sonrosada y graciosa fueron la alegría de sus padres.

Su abuela materna, siempre le prodigaba los más tiernos cariños, pues fue siempre pequeñito y delgadito, con ella aprendió a bailar dentro de su corralito. Era tan gracioso bailando la canción del caballito saltarín que provocaba la risa de quienes lo veían.

Como todo niño nacido en la Selva Peruana, pronto aprendió a convivir con la naturaleza como la flora y la fauna de este hermoso rincón de nuestro Perú.

Las primeras vacaciones

Pronto llegaron las primeras vacaciones y Tino pudo por fin conocer Lima la gran Ciudad Capital. Con sus grandes calles y edificios y cantidad de personas que él nunca había visto en su ciudad natal y siempre agarrado con sus manitas de sus padres y abuela que no se separaban de él.

En Lima pudieron conocer la Iglesia de Santa Rosa, donde Tino le pidió a su mamá que escribiera un deseo ya que el todavía no sabía escribir, para poderlo depositar en el pozo. También conocieron la Iglesia de San Francisco y la Catedral donde le enseñaron a Tino a rezar.

En unos de esos días tras un breve paseo por el Jirón de la Unión, viajaron en un bus a un hermoso lugar que se llamaba el Castillo de Huacho a orillas del mar en el Norte Chico donde Tino pudo corretear a sus anchas y disfrutar la brisa marina.

Luego de unos días en la Capital, viajaron a la hermosa Ciudad Blanca de Arequipa. Con sus hermosas calles y sitios turísticos, con su imponente Catedral, luego la hermosa Playa de Mollendo donde Tino se bañó en una pequeña piscina de arena que su padre le construyo, así mismo conoció el venerable Santuario de Chapi.

De nuevo a casa

Culminadas las vacaciones de nuevo en Iquitos a proseguir sus vivencia propios de un niño.

A los 2 añitos producto de la inclemencia de los cambios climáticos fue presa de una terrible neumonía que lo tuvo postrado por varios días en un hospital. Pero quiso nuestro Señor que saliera airoso de esta enfermedad y gracias a los cuidados de su madre y abuela, ya que su padre por motivos de trabajo estuvo lejos, pudo por fin reponerse.

Fue pasando el tiempo y ya Tino estaba en el jardín de niños cursando sus primeros estudios iniciales, era tan gracioso verlo con su uniforme que constaba de un shorcito azul marino y su polito blanco con las iniciales del colegio, siempre el más pequeño del aula.

En el jardín de inicial pronto aprendió las vocales, así como los primeros números.

Algunos fines de semana cuando Papá estaba con ellos, iban de paseo al Complejo Turístico de Quistococha, que está ubicado en el kilómetro 6 de la carretera Nauta; Luego de pasear por el zoológico y apreciar los diversas variedades de animales, como los monos y el delfín wayuri que era su preferido, se iban a la playa artificial conocida como Tunchi Playa donde Tino se daba un chapuzón siempre con el cuidado de sus padres y luego el paseo en bote.

Momento de ir al colegio

Pronto Tino cumplió 6 años y llego el momento de ir al colegio, pues comenzaría ya el primer grado de primaria y a prepararse para comenzar una nueva vida, tuvo la suerte de ser admitido en un colegio católico, pues debería aprender con los estudios: así como también a querer a Dios, ser una mejor persona para regocijo de sus padres y seres queridos.

En el colegio, algunos niños que eran más grandes comenzaron a burlarse y molestarle, pues era el más pequeñín, pero su padre le enseño que la grandeza se llevaba en las buenas actitudes y tener fortaleza para ser mejor cada día y la mejor defensa era enseñarles para que sean mejores personas; así consiguió a su mejor amigo Carlitos.

A veces se ponía triste por no compartir mucho tiempo con su padre, pues él viajaba constantemente por su trabajo, pero era la única manera de salir adelante.

En cuanto a superar la tristeza, su padre le enseño que cuando se sintiera triste, solo pensara que tanto el cómo su madre lo querían mucho; así que cuando estaba un poco triste pensaba que en ese momento su padre aún estando lejos pensaba en él y lo quería mucho y si estaba lejos, solo era para buscar el bienestar de la familia y que algún día ya nunca más se separarían y que su madre siempre estaría cerquita a él.

Y siempre esperando las vacaciones pues con lo que ahorraban podían conocer algunos sitios interesantes de nuestro hermoso Perú.

La despedida

Sucedió un hecho trágico a mitad de año, falleció la abuelita materna de una penosa enfermedad, ¿ahora quién los acompañarían en sus viajes tan esperados por Tino?

Este suceso causó gran pena y melancolía en Tino y su familia. Ahora le tocaba el turno a la abuelita paterna Rita, quien le dijo a Tino que su abuelita Hilda les acompañaría desde el cielo y que siempre estaría en su pequeño corazón: Ahora ella ahora les acompañaría, velando por el junto a sus padres.

El próximo viaje sería a Cusco, “Oh que emoción”, con sus padres la abuelita Rita, y la abuelita Hilda dentro de su billetera su foto y con gran amor les acompañaría en su recuerdo.
